Moonpie Software Labs

We buildwhat’s next.

We are a software engineering practice. We take on the systems that are difficult to design, expensive to get wrong, and have to keep working long after we have left the room.

What we build

One standard, across every discipline.

Moonpie turns ambitious ideas into production-ready technology. We work across the full lifecycle — architecture, engineering, deployment, security, and the long tail of keeping software alive.

Moonpie products

We don’t just build software. We build products.

Moonpie engineers its own products, not only systems for other organisations. Everything in this section is owned and operated by Moonpie.

Coming soon

Moonpie Products

We’re building something of our own.

Our products are currently in development. We’ll introduce them when they’re ready.

Product engineering

Have a product of your own?We can engineer it.

The same team, architecture and engineering standards that build Moonpie’s own products are available for yours.

Selected work

Built by Moonpie.

Platforms we have designed, engineered, and shipped for the organisations running them. We publish a case study once there is something real to say about it.

System Online

The brand system assembled from its own construction rules — the measuring grid, the orbital instrument, the node network, and the wordmark drawn one stroke at a time. The same geometry the site is built from, running as a film.

R&D

THE MOONPIE LAB

WHERE WE EXPERIMENT WITH WHAT COMES NEXT.

The Lab is our research arm. It exists so that the work we ship for clients is informed by technology we have already taken apart ourselves. We prototype, we test, we discard most of it, and the ideas that survive become products or capabilities.

Ideas are cheap. Experiments turn them into possibilities.

Artificial Intelligence

Model evaluation, retrieval architectures, and agent design — measuring what actually holds up under production conditions.

Boring where it matters.

We choose tools for their operational characteristics, not their popularity. This is what we reach for, and what we are prepared to support in production.

Engineering philosophy

Good software is engineered.

Not assembled, not generated, not hoped into existence. These are the five things we hold to on every project.

  1. Think deeply

Understand the problem before designing the solution. Most bad software is a correct answer to the wrong question, and no amount of engineering rescues it later.

  2. Build simply

Complex engineering should produce simple experiences. The complexity belongs in the system, absorbed by the people who built it — never handed to the user.

  3. Engineer for scale

Design foundations that can grow. That means boring, well-understood decisions in the places that are expensive to change, and flexibility where change is cheap.

  4. Ship

Ideas become valuable when they become real. Software that is nearly finished is worth nothing; getting it in front of users is where the actual learning starts.

  5. Keep learning

Technology changes continuously. We treat that as the working condition rather than a disruption, which is why the Lab exists alongside the client work.

How we work

From idea to production.

Five stages. Each one ends with something you can read, use, or run — not a status update.

  1. 01

    Discover

    Understand the problem.

We work out what is actually being solved, who it is for, and what constraints are real versus assumed. This is the cheapest place to change your mind.

    • Problem definition
    • Scope and constraints
    • Success criteria
  2. 02

    Architect

    Define the system.

Technology choices, data model, integration surface, and the failure modes we intend to design around. Decisions get written down with their reasoning attached.

    • System architecture
    • Data model
    • Technology decisions
  3. 03

    Build

    Engineer the product.

Iterative delivery against the architecture, in reviewable increments. You see working software throughout, not at the end.

    • Working increments
    • Code review
    • Environments
  4. 04

    Test

    Validate it properly.

Correctness, performance under load, security posture, and accessibility. Anything that only works on a fast laptop is not finished.

    • Automated tests
    • Performance pass
    • Security review
  5. 05

    Launch

    Deploy, observe, improve.

Deployment pipeline, monitoring, and the operational handover. Launch is the point the real feedback starts arriving, so we plan for what happens after it.

    • Deployment pipeline
    • Monitoring
    • Operational handover

About

We are Moonpie.

Moonpie Software Labs exists to build technology that solves meaningful problems — the kind that are worth the engineering effort it takes to solve them properly.

We are a software engineering and product development company. We work with organizations that have something specific they need built and want it built by people who will still be able to explain it a year later.

That means we care about the parts of software that are invisible from the outside: how the data is modelled, what happens when a service goes down, whether the next engineer can read the code. Those decisions are what separate a product that lasts from one that has to be rewritten.

Mission
Build software that solves real problems, and build it well enough that it keeps solving them.
Vision
A practice where research and delivery feed each other — what we learn in the Lab shows up in the work we ship.
Engineering
Understand first, then simplify, then build for the scale the product will actually reach. Not the scale it might.
Culture
Small teams, direct communication, and written reasoning behind decisions. Nobody should have to guess why something was built this way.
